Art Junky is back with a bang to celebrate the New Year!

Art Junky is the indoor market that combines our love for quirky jumble sale culture with local artistic talent, showcasing over 50 stalls of unique and affordable artwork, books, illustrations, music, print, fashion, collectibles, vintage... and much more!!

It’s time to pick up some New Year bargains and treat yourself to some beautiful original artworks – all of which you can find here at our eclectic one day bazaar! Art Junky is a great day out for all ages – kids under 10 get in free – we have face painting, glitter tattoos and henna by the fantastic funky faces and Phoenix Brighton Arts Courses tutor, Alice Walton, is offering affordable drop-in ceramic button making workshops for all ages!

The Art Junky Cafe will be serving plenty of homemade goodies and winter warmers to wake you up, and resident live DJ’s will be providing weird and wonderful tunes throughout the day to keep you on your toes!

CHINESE NEW YEAR 2012

Today marks the start of the Chinese New Year celebrations which has seen millions of Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese ringing in the new year with fireworks, dancing, rituals and feasting that will traditional last for 15 days. Each day of the festival has a particular role with participants abiding to traditional beliefs for each one of these, for instance the 3rd day is considered as a bad day to socialize and on the 8th day a family dinner is hosted to mark the birthday of the Jade Emperor. The celebration is then finally closed out on the 15 day with the Lantern festival where people leave lanterns and candles outside there houses to help guide the spirits back home.

2012 is the year of the water dragon which is perceived as a mystical and auspicious creature in Chinese cultures and this year is expected to bring prosperity and transformational change.

Last year we were incredibly lucky to have the amazing Matt Sewell come into our Brighton Hotel and decorate one of our bedrooms. Below is a little update to what he's been up since his visit, and he sure has been a busy man. With commissions coming many places including a collection of t-shirts for Helly Hansen as well as a lovely book commission by the name of our garden birds.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE WEEK

National Chocolate week is upon us so we thought we share a delightfully Delicious little recipe with you! Once you try this beautifully rich cake you'll wonder why you haven't cooked a chocolate cake with beetroot before!

50g bitter cocoa powder
180g plain flour
1½tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
250g caster sugar
300g cooked fresh beetroot
3 eggs
200ml corn oil
1tsp vanilla extract

Heat the oven to 180C/Gas mark 4. Butter and flour an 18cm (7in) round or square cake tin.
Sift the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Mix in the sugar and set aside.
Puree the beetroot in a food processor. Add the eggs, one at a time, then add the corn oil and vanilla and beat until smooth.
Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and pour the beetroot mixture into the well. Lightly mix, using a rubber spatula, and pour into the prepared cake tin.
Bake for 40 minutes, or until an inserted skewer comes out clean. It won’t rise a great deal and the top may crack a bit. Allow to cool a little before removing from the tin, then leave to cool completely on a wire rack. To serve, dust the cake with icing sugar or bitter cocoa powder, and cut into generous slices.

THE MARWOOD COFFEE SHOP

The Marwood Coffee Shop is one of the most quirky and imaginative places in Brighton to grab a coffee and is situated in a corner of the Lanes! They serve a fantastic range of coffee and also create 'life changing cakes, beetroot and chocolate, courgette and lime, plum and chilli to name but a few'. All of this is and more is available in what I can only describe as a miss match of beauty! The walls and building are decorated in a variety of knick-knack’s, Victorian gems, illustration’s and pictures from years gone by. The furniture is extremely comfortable, the staff are wonderful and we think along with everything else the café has to offer makes this an incredibly enjoyable and delightful place to visit and makes you want to come back again and again!

The café also hold regular events and classes and this month they will be holding an all night gaming session in conjunction with the Brighton Japan festival!

THE BLIND TIGER

The Blind Tiger Formally known as Hector’s house is the brand new venue on Grand Parade in Brighton. After weeks and weeks of work the team at Playgroup have turned this venue into something spectacular with a new sound system, a custom built stage, an excellent paint job and a brilliant line-up for the next few months which are nearly all FREE! This Saturday the Blind Tiger will be hosting the brilliant Stay Sick Night, Where there will be two live acts and the legendary Stay Sick DJ’s filling you with the very best dirty rockabilly, filthy garage, 50’s R n B, voodoo punk and psychobilly madness. The live performances will be bought to you by the mighty Witchdoktors and one man blues stomper Tobias Mudlow! We love Playgroup and everything they do and will be definitely heading down this weekend for some foot stomping madness!

AIMEE BRIGGINSHAW is the lucky WINNER of our FIRST CONTEST! She is a Brighton based Painter predominantly working with oil and resin mediums.

Aimee works in an abstract style taking influence from the sea, creatures, organic forms and anything out of the ordinary, which leaves her work open to interpretation making each painting different every time you look at.

She has a set process by starting with the pouring of resin on the canvas and letting it take a life of it's own, then adds the controlled marks and the organic forms on top creating this alien like world!

WHITE NIGHT FESTIVAL

Beatabet and the Metahub are Brighton based collectives and have come together again on the night of the festival to bring you an ambitious and wonderful interpretation of the festival! There will be teams roaming the festival with cameras videoing the city wide party as it unfolds and then feeding this live footage, and the publics back to a team of world renowned VJ’s. The VJ’s, which will be housed in Jubilee library will then re-mix and re-interpret the footage before projecting this unique first person experience of the festival’s going on’s onto one of the cities most stunning sculptures, in the centre of Jubilee Square! With so much going on this year, we are sure this will be one of the most popular events of the night and probably the best way to get see everything! We cannot wait to see this unique project and are already counting down the days!

The amazing White Night Festival is Brighton and Hoves unique all night festival which takes place every year on the last Saturday in October, when the clocks go forward. The full program of events has just been released today and it looks even better than last years. There will be over 70 different art's, music, food and even more taking place at various locations all across the city. Every event has been specifically created for the festival and this years theme is utopia. You'll be able to sample an array of things from a pedal powered cinema at The Fortune of War to a Dolly Parton themed party on the streets of New Road!

'Flickers Under The Water' Will be held by the Artist residence and will be a Night-walk from the depths of an underground car park to the sea-edge and on; and immersive, hands on experience that places you inside a story.

You set off, alone or with a friend, with a series of flick books - navigation tools to guide your way. Flicking the pages animates a photo sequence, revealing what happens next.

THE GREEN DOOR STORE

The Green Door Store is one of Brighton's little hidden gems. For all of you that don't know it, it is deep under Brighton train station and around the corner in what you can only describe as a ww2 bunker. With exposed brick, uneven floors, the stand alone door frames and miss match furniture gives this venue a unique feeling and leaves you feeling like you have been in a cellar which hasn't been touched for many many years! Last night was our first visit to the venue and already we cant wait to go back!

This venue has only been open since the beginning of the year and has already become one of the hottest places to go out in the city!

The Green Door Store has already played host to some big bands, speakeasy nights and a regular book launches hosted by VICE magazine, Keep checking the blog for regular events listings and photos from various nights!

THE DUKE OF YORKS

The Duke of York’s Picture house opened it’s doors way back in 1910 and has always been operating as a cinema going through many transformations from an Edwardian cinema to fleapit and is now seen as one of the UK’s leading independent cinema’s. The cinema has gone through many stages in the last 100 years and the fascinating project DOY100 has bought the story alive by involving the local community and historic records to retrace and celebrate it’s history. The project has bought together a 100 years of photographs, programmes, advertisements, newspaper articles and so much more which has encapsulated the history and love for the cinema! The Duke is truly unique and sets it self aside from we suspect from a cinema, it is a grade II listed and Britain’s oldest cinema and still retains much of its original features creating a feeling you certainly wont get from the modern cinema. The Duke has a regular programme of the best art house, independent, foreign language, cult and classic films. The Duke of York’s is much loved by everyone in Brighton and will be for a very long time!

‘Stop Looking At The Walls, look Out The Window’ is a solo show By the hugely talented and very much the artist of the moment Jim McElvaney and will be at the No Walls Gallery in the heart of Brighton City. Jim is one of the countries brightest talents and his first solo show was earlier this year at ‘Outsiders Gallery” up in Newcastle and went down a storm and has earned him international recognition. Straight after this show at No Walls he will be jetting off to Seoul and Moscow where he’s taking part in the Moscow Biennale. ‘Stop Looking At The Walls, Look Out The Window’ will have a eclectic mix of drawings, paintings, prints and will encourage the audience to look beyond the contemporary portrait and see things from a different perspective. MOSHI MOSHI

Moshi Moshi is Brighton’s Premier Japanese restaurant and is located in Bartholomew Square in the heart of the Lanes. They are best known for the quality and authenticity of their handmade dishes and also for the sustainability of the fish they use and have won several national and international awards. This month Moshi Moshi have been actively supporting the Brighton and Hove Food festival and have hosted several events and have many more to go before the month is out.

Tonight they will be holding a ‘Tutored Sake Tasting” and have teamed up a selection of sake makers offering an exciting chance to learn more about the flavours, production and etiquette of this increasingly popular drink. You’ll be able to sample 6 different types of sake while enjoying an authentic menu laid out by the chef.

The next two Friday’s this month from 6pm - 8.30pm Moshi Moshi also hold host to the ‘Secret Supper Club: Dining In The Dark’ in which you will be put through a multi-sensory experience you wont forget in a hurry. You’ll be given a complementary cocktail on arrival then a 3-course meal will be put on for you with the twist of being blindfolded. Featuring Greta Scacchi, Richard E Grant, Lenny Henry and others, this will be the first ever opportunity to see the photographs that helped turn the world's media onto the pressing issue of fish conservation.

This weeks spotlight is on Rose Sanderson a Bristol based illustrator. Rose graduated in 2003 and has exhibited in several different cities around the UK and world and is steadily building a name for her self. Her work is incredibly detailed and manages to create beauty were few would see it. She takes great influence from the natural world, entomology, anatomy and strange creatures. Rose’s most recent work will be on show at this years Brighton Art Fair and predominately focus’s on the fragility of life and our understanding of it. In this work she wants to focus on what was and celebrate its existence. There will be large paintings as well a smaller works on show and with only a few days to go the excitement and buzz is really starting to build for this years Fair and we at Artist Residence cant wait to see Rose’s amazing work.

OKTOBERFEST 30TH SEPT-2ND OCT

Oktoberfest is fast approaching and will be the final event of the Brighton and Hove Food Festival and will hosted by the beautiful Pub Du Vin on Ship Street. Featuring over 35 ciders, real ales and perries from local and leading brewers in the area as well as a selection of handpicked lagers and beers from Europe. A selection of Bavarian dishes and bar snacks will be available to buy and On Saturday night were there will be an oompah band to get you in the spirit of things. Tickets are £5 and include a festival branded steine glass and tasting note. Tickets are selling fast so get yours quick.

FISHY FISHY

Fishy Fishy is a seafood brasserie co owned by Dermot O’Leary in the famous Brighton Lanes, which offers an informal relaxed dining experience with simple decor that’s the right balance between clean and cosy. It has shiny wooden floors throughout and light blue walls that are adorned with fishy illustrations in gold frames, the outside seating is situated in a busy courtyard surrounded by several other restaurants and during the summer months, there is live music in the evening that makes for an unforgettable experience that will leave you wanting to come back time after time. Being a predominantly fish based restaurant they support sustainable fishing resources and only catch fish from the English channel, which means they can only serve dishes that are in season, for instance only cod in the winter months and lobster in the summer months. They work closely with suppliers making sure the fish they use is caught in the least wasteful way, which means fish are line caught, pots and nets with large holes in are use so larger fish are caught and the smaller ones go through. We love this restaurant at Artist Residence and cant recommend it enough so get down there quick and try it out for yourself.

Brighton and Hove food festival is one of the largest of its kind and runs through the whole of September bringing you the best food and produce the city and county have to offer. Every weekend has something going on and already the city has hosted the Big Sussex Market outside the pavilion with live food demos and stalls. This weekend it will be no different with Preston park playing host to the new ‘Sussex Cheese Bowling’ event where there will be, Cheese bowling, Morris dancers, a real ale tent, plenty of food stalls and not to forget the biggest chilli event in the UK offering an eye watering, spicy experience for all. The city’s restaurants, cafes, hotels and other various venues will be holding events such as Drakes Secret Supper Club, The Big food Debate, Secret Sussex At The Grand, The Sussex and World Market on the Hove lawns and many many more. THE FORTUNE OF WAR

The Fortune of War is nestled in Brighton’s arches by the sea, and is by far the city’s oldest seafront watering hole dating back to 1882 and still remains the one true pub amongst many clubs and bars on the seafront. The popularity of this pub is easily recognisable as soon as you visit for the first time. The Beer garden is probably one of the best in the country with panoramic views of the sea and Brighton’s two famous piers framing it. Once you step inside you’ll be transported to another world with what you would only describe as an upside down boat. On the second floor there are large windows and again you will be able to see for miles out to sea. The pub has a traditional décor but with a nautical twist to it all. If the views and pub aren’t enough of an incentive to get down there then the regular music line will be, with resident DJ spots from the likes of DJ Derek and DJ Scratchy. This Weekend they will be playing to host to the one and only WRONGTOM and if his last set was anything to go by this shouldn’t be missed by anyone.

JAMES CAUTY

James Cauty is a British anarchist artist and musician, and has always been in the limelight from his early years as the co founder of the wild pop groups The Orb, The JAMMS, The KLF and art do-gooders The K-Foundation. In 1994 Cauty gained notoriety for burning a million pounds with his then band mate Bill Drummond. And then went onto producing the limited edition 'black Smoke, Stamps of Mass Destruction' in 2003 which were the focus of huge media attention due to the graphic nature of the images and featured on the front of the times newspaper. And were subsequently withdraw when the royal mail threatened him with legal action. His hugely anticipated exhibition in Brighton 'A Riot In a Jam Jar' is an ongoing sculptural series that aim to explore, exploit and commemorate real and imagined riotous events. Ink’d gallery in the Brighton Lanes has specially commissioned a small collection of the works and will be also showing a selection of larger works. The works are created at a scale of 1:87 and have all been beautifully hand painted and constructed using traditional model making techniques then exhibited in jam jars. The show runs from SEPTEMBER 16TH 2011 to OCTOBER 9TH 2011.

Our artist of the week comes from Anthony Garrat who will be exhibiting at this years Brighton Art Fair. Anthony is a contemporary landscape painter from Bristol and works at the Jamaica Street studios. He mainly creates large scale acrylic and oil paintings with inspiration from different British landscapes. He is interested in the power and emotional impact of a landscape over the person and this is felt instantly when you see his work, He paints quickly embodying the energy of the landscape whether it's of a city, seaside or countryside. Anthony is represented by several different gallery's already and is a sort after artist and shouldn't be missed at this years show.

Matt beautifully decorated room 1 for us back last year and since his work just keeps getting better and better. His work for us 'take a trip on the magic bus to the seaside' draws on his rural heritage and invokes a feeling of the adventurer that's within everybody. The way he uses landscapes along with bright colours creates a unique style which is similar to no other. Since his commission he has been very busy with an exhibition in New York, an advert for Crown Paints, live painting at a Flaming Lips gig to name a few. We are very proud to have a room painted by him and hope to have him back in the near future if were lucky.

ACE CAFE REUNION

Ace Cafe reunion is one of Brightons most famous yearly event and attracts thousand's of people to the beautiful beach location and this year was no different to any other. Motorcyclist's from all of the UK and Europe descend in mass's and roar through the streets of brighton and onto Madeira drive for 3 packed days to celebrate the history, culture and style of the Ace Cafe and what it represents. The event has been an integral part of the Ace Cafe reunion's since 1996. There are trade and club stands, displays, live music, special guests and hundreds of bikes on display which makes for an amazing day out for the whole family to enjoy.

The Foragers is one of Hoves most stylish, friendliest and welcoming pubs. It has great staff accompanied by great surroundings, with DJ's playing the very best soul and funk music on the weekends. They serve food late into the evening which can make for a classy night out with your friends or lovers. They are all about sustainability and land management and only serve organic and free range ingredients. They aim to get there food locally and source it from such places as Clayton Farm, South Brockwell Farms, small family run business's and the most importantly go out a forage for as much as possible. This is one of the best pubs around and we cant stress that enough and think once you visit you'll think the same.

URBAN FARMING

We at AR are in the process of creating a brand new urban farm on our roof top. We are aiming to provide most of the produce for our cafe Lai's Lai's, from fresh fruit, vegetables and if your lucky the occasional fresh egg from our future in house hens. We hope to emulate other successful farms and use things such as leaf litter for bedding, kitchen waste for compost and anything else to reduce our own wastage. With thanks to the Woodstore in Brighton we have already started collecting our planting beds and hope to get next years harvest off to a flying start.

Room 9 in the artist residence hotel was decorated by Maria back last year and is still one of our favourite rooms. For all those that haven't seen it make sure you next stay in the hotel is in her magnificent room, but if your not able to don't worry as the launch night of her new album is at The Bookclub on Leonard Street in London on September 27th at 7.30pm. She will be performing live at the launch as well exhibiting a selection of new work which will be kept a secret up until the event! For people that haven't heard her music before will be in for a surprise as maria delves into unknown realms using powerful and sometimes dark poetry over minimal beats. Her art could be seen as a stark contrast to her music, with her use of bold colours and playful imagery. This is sure to be an incredible night and one not to be missed so pencil it in your diary and get down there.

Here in Brighton for all those that don't already know, the one and only Willy Mason will be gracing the stage of Komedia this Thursday as part of the End Of The Road Festival Tour. Willy Mason is famous for his song Oxygen and has an undeniable hobo folk style. His music in the early years was very much one man and his guitar, but as the years went on it became more polished and his impressive song writing got better and better. His lyrics have always shown maturity well beyond his age. This show is promising to be huge and we at Artist Residence think it will be the perfect thing to bring you out of the gloomy weather and celebrate the end of the festival season.

Brighton Pride is almost on us!

So it's nearly that time of year again.... Brighton Pride is tantalisingly close.
The final touches are being made to the costumes; Preston park is ready to go and we're prepping for a very busy and happy weekend.

Despite many rumours on social networking sites we have been assured that Pride WILL be going ahead as planned this year! With everything that has been going on these last few days it's even more important to remember the spirit of Pride, and to take to the streets to celebrate diversity, acceptance and celebrate our vibrant and beautiful communities!

For the first time ever, revellers will be charged £17.50 to enter the festival, meaning the event will have plenty more tents, bars and events going on within the gates of Preston Park.
It also means there may be massive queues to buy tickets on the door so Pride organisers are urging people to buy them in advance from one of the various registered outlets across Brighton and the South.

Our current Artist-in-Residence is Fox (founder of SALUTE). His exhibition begins on 26th August and ends in late October. For his show, Fox has been obsessing with 100 year old images which he discovered on a recent trip to Berlin. His prints are being created at INKSPOT using blood (!), gold and ink. Exciting times!!

We were all very pleased here at AR to be featured in The Sunday Times Magazine feature on Brighton hotels!

WORDING;

If you distilled the essence of Brighton and fashioned it into a B&B, it would resemble the Artist Residence. Quirky, a touch scruffy, but mostly downright good fun, the place was created by Justin Salisbury, who's turned a greying boarding house into an eclectic, eccentric gallery-cum-B&B.

Each room is courtesy of a different artist, and thus unique. For instance, The Watchers features a mural of trees sprouting fuchsia and scarlet circles, while Alice has sherbet-pink soft furnishings and line-drawn herons parading across the walls. All rooms are en-suite, with a decent shower into what could be mistaken for a wardrobe (don't worry - they're spacious enough inside!)

Salisbury may call his place a boutique hotel, but it's defiantly more budget than bling - breakfast comes in a bag, and there's no bar. Downstairs is given over to a gallery space where temporary artists in residence exhibit and sell their work. Approached with the right attitude, AR is a real find - and with a second branch now open in Penzance, young Mr Salisbury may be onto a winning formula.

"I brought a watermelon...."

So after another glorious weekend in Brighton we are all feeling a touch sunburnt but full of summery smiles.

A spot of lunch in the courtyard on Saturday took an arty turn as Fox, Sharon and Megan found themselves making a spontaneous animation. Of a watermelon. Being eaten. No, we're not really sure where it came from either!

Paddling around the pier!

Now the sun has finally come out the plan of picnics and al fresco fun can start to be taken seriously! and the court yard at Artist Residence is the perfect to place to catch some rays.

So, onto the Next Big thing Brighton is offering us this June. It's been quite a month so far and we aren't even half way in! We've seen the classic car run, the Hanover Festival and Kemp Town Festival, Fashion week and Springwatch. But Brighton never stops celebrating culture and this week is the continuation of that marvelling at all the world has to offer.... Brighton Japan Festival.

The main highlights of the Japan Festival are the Asahi Anime and Moshi Matsuri street festivals, featuring stalls full of wonderful Japanese illustration, publications, sweet, accessories... You can check out the array of curiosities and delights here

There's also plenty of events happening at locations all over Brighton and you can check out those events here. Our highlights are the fundraiser for Japan at Moshi Moshi, Akira at the Duke of Yorks Picturehouse, and Tokyo Sounds: New Music Showcase feat. The festival takes place from the 18th to the 15th of June and we think it there's only one word for it. Amazing

Something special has been going on at the Artist Residence this week... Our lovely resident FOX has been creating a stop frame as part of his open studios this month! With the help of friend and professional photographer ********** Fox has created this rather stylish (and toothy) video using paste ups and hand-drawn illustration. Our opinion? Well, we think its pretty wonderful.. but we're all ears to yours! please post your comments and show us some LOVE!!!

KEEPING UP WITH KEMPTOWN

Kemptown is one of Brighton's most vibrant areas, having a real sense of community and an eclectic mix of shops and watering holes. Today is the much anticipated Kemptown Carnival, and we reackon this year's going to be a corker!

The organisers say...

"The Kemptown Carnival is a community led event to celebrate and promote the unique gem that is St Georges Road; the heart of Kemptown. This event will revive the spirit of the former Kemptown Carnival but will embrace the new, along with promoting home-grown talents. By providing a space for locals to display and take part in creative activities, from street performance to music workshops, art exhibitions to craft stalls. We hope this will become a sustainable event to showcase all that makes the heart of Kemptown so special."

The event is expected to draw an audience of up to 10,000 people, with attractions on the day including; The Parade of Flowers (very large samba parade), 3 /4 live band stages with, a robot parade, a small army of street performers, Capoeira displays, choirs, dance troupes, graffiti workshops, break dancing, a fashion event, art and book fairs, community market, a children's area, magicians, creative workshops....and more!

We have been filling up the Artist Residence with some last minute day trippers to Brighton... and why not, the sun is shining and there is loads of fun to be had in Brighton during June.. So why not be spontaneous, get on a train (or even a bike!) and get yourself down to sunny Brighton!

Tomorrow Brighton Fashion Week continues at The Pavillion Gardens until Friday, with a couture art installation. This exciting and innovative installation is situated in the Costume Gallery at Brighton Museum. Using Brighton as a source of inspiration, nine of the city’s best known and dynamic designers have created new works that demonstrate the skill, opulence and art of the Couturier. The installation features works by Renaissance, Suzie Turner, Joanne Fleming, Juliana Sissons, Mazelina, Paul Milana, Chrissie Nicholson-Wilde, Ailsa and Sarina Poppy. This weekend sees the return of the Brighton & Hove Springwatch Festival. It's no surprise that in a city as obviously environmentally conscious as Brighton, the previous years have been a huge success... Taking place in Stanmer Park, this FREE family friendly event features Huxley’s birds of prey, Heavy horse & cart rides, Sheep shearing, Wildlife storytelling, Morris dancing and Fun fair rides. The annual London to Brighton Bike Ride takes place on Sunday June the 19th, and we are delighted to welcome all those getting involved to the hotel! If you're not taking part in the bike ride yourself then being in Brighton is a real event, as everyone hits the pubs to reward themselves after a hard days cycling! And good luck to all those taking part!

We thought we'd show you a few snaps of how the cafe area is looking. Fox has created us a gorgeous menu board... we love it!

And started adding his own marvellous work to the cafe space with screen prints available to buy or to browse whilst you drink a delicious cup of Teapigs organic tea. Now that the terrace is open to guests and visitors to the gallery we know its one of Brightons best spots for a cuppa and a piece of delicious organic homemade cake! It will be a great preview for Fox's exhibition next month... and its definitely worth checking out the open studios Fox is running over the coming weeks. What's not to like!

BRIGHTON FASHION WEEK BEGINS!

So today we pack up The Fringe Festival and The Brighton Festival and put it away until next year. Its a bit sad to be saying goodbye to these great events, however creativity in Brighton continues, as do the exciting happenings in and around Brighton! This week is Brighton Fashion Week and all over Brighton some of our favourite venues will be hosting catwalk shows, award ceremonies, installations gigs and much much more! The fashion on show ranges from couture to channels 4's Frock Me, so there really is something for everyone no matter what their style. So most of the Brighton Fringe events will be winding up this week... heres a look at a couple of quirky temporary installations where you can have a wee drink and be entertained...

THE HENDRICKS GIN CURIOSITY TENT AND HORSELESS CARRIAGE

JUBILEE SQUARE

This wonderful piece of fun houses free gin and tonics in exchange for a volunteering strange memory. The carriage itself is full of weird and wonderful paraphernalia and friendly, eccentrically dressed hosts. There are plenty of impromptu bits and bobs occurring, including 'Volks Train of Thought', but there is also a tent behind the carriage which holds enough space for an exciting cabaret and other unusual events.

HECTORS HOUSE SPEAKEASY

OLD STEIN/VICTORIA GARDENS

Hectors House has been made over for this years Fringe Festival into an old shoe shop - well just from the outside. Those who've turned away from the old style cobblers have missed a trick - inside is a Speakeasy, hosted by Brighton based performing promoters, Pop Up Playgroup.

Get yourself down to 33 Regency Square tomorrow!! Our artists here at Artist residence are ALWAYS really quiet about what they've got going on in that studio downstairs... until now. Yep, ever wanted to see how great work is created? well nows your chance.

Open houses are a great place to see where the magic happens, but how many chances do you get to see work being produced - thats why an open studio with someone as established as Fox is such a unique opportunity. As you can probably see were pretty excited about it. Fox will be creating a stop frame animation, and it should be a pretty interesting and spotaneous experience... C heck out Foxes Prep for a one off stop frame animation, made here at Artist Residence!! And see it made live for 2 weeks from tomorrow!!

We would like to wish a warm welcome to Fox at the Artist Residence in Brighton. You may know Fox from Salute Creative, a graphic design group based in Brighton. Fox is joining us here over the coming month to be our artist in residence, hosting an open studios during his time, and then exhibiting in our gallery early July. Pop down for a tour around the artist designed rooms, to see Fox's open studio and to see Jamie Shaw's amazing exhibition.
